Insurance
Insurance coverage is a key element of the University's Risk Management Framework and plays a critical role in protecting the University and its staff from liabilities related to circumstances and events both contemplated from its business undertakings, and unforseen in the case of events like natural disasters.
A student undertaking work-integrated learning as defined by the QUT MOPP policy [C/6.1] is covered by QUT's Personal Accident, Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance provided they are enrolled in the unit. Students are also covered by QUT's (limited) Personal Accident insurance policy whilst on campus and/or engaged in campus/course/sport related activities and/or practical or community placement activities related to their course of study. These policies should not be seen as a substitute for private medical health cover and/or accident/life insurance / income protection insurance. It is highly recommended that students consider taking out their own insurance to ensure coverage. For further information see MOPP C/4.4.6 Linked to another web site and refer to Finance and Resource Planning.
Risk management, risk assessment statement and health and safety
Students undertaking professional placement will be required to participate in an off-campus workplace which may involve exposure to risks not encountered in a normal on-campus environment. When undertaking a professional placement, students will automatically be subject to the Workplace Health and Safety policies and procedures of the organization. Students are required by law to comply with these policies and procedures at all times. Students are to conduct themselves in such a manner that no additional element of risk is introduced. Measures to minimise risks include:
- Appropriate preparation prior to commencing your work placement including identification of the relevant WH&S policies, and procedures and arrangements for appropriate workplace insurance
- Orientation to the work organisation including the completion of any required orientation processes or training activities
- Adequate supervision while on professional placement.
In the event that an incident occurs students are required to complete the local incident notification and attach a copy to the completed first page of the QUT SPRI form for lodgement at QUT as both organisations need to be aware of the incident.

Professional conduct
Students are expected to act in a professional and courteous manner whilst undertaking professional placements, be appropriately and neatly dressed and have prepared well for the experience.
Travel
It is expected that the majority of practicum/clinical placements will take place within Queensland. In some courses students may be required to undertake at least one rural or regional placement. Travel procedures to each of these venues will primarily consist of using public transport facilities and/or private registered vehicles and may incur additional costs. Travel to and from these organisations is not expected to be any different in risk characteristics compared to the students' travel to and from QUT campuses.
National police records check
Before undertaking professional placements, students in some programs may be required to complete a National Police Check through the Queensland Police Service. The National Police Check must be renewed every three years during a student's duration of study. It is the student's responsibility to obtain and submit the National Police Check application form and cover application costs.
