Examinations and clinical practice

If you have a mid-semester or end-of-semester examination on the same day as your placement you may either:

  • request a deferred examination
  • make arrangements with your clinical practice facilitator to take sufficient time out from your shift to attend the examination.

Many students prefer to make arrangements to sit their examination on the set date rather than delay their studies. If you choose to do this you need to print out a copy of your exam timetable for your clinical practice facilitator and request that you be excused for the time necessary. Please note however that you do need to ensure that any absences will not impact on your ability to meet the objectives of the clinical practice for assessment purposes.

Requesting a deferral

You'll need to submit a deferred examination form. A copy of your placement details from our Field Placement System (FiPS) must be attached to this application. For mid-semester examinations please submit your application directly to the Faculty of Health Student and Teaching Support Centre on Level 6, B Wing, O Block, KG or the School of Nursing Student Centre. This will prevent delays in the processing of the applications. It is essential that you check the dates of the deferred examinations before submitting this form to ensure that you are available to attend. You can find the dates of deferred examinations by using our key dates search.

Please note deferred examinations will not be approved where the examination is on a Saturday within your placement block unless you are specifically required to be on placement on that day.
