I am studying the Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) PY45, what studies do I need to do to be able to register as a psychologist in Australia?

In order to register as a Provisional Psychologist in Australia, you will need to undertake a fourth year of study in psychology by undertaking either:

  • the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology (PY20)
  • the Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Honours Psychology) (PY09)

Both of these courses are fully accredited with the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and provide provisional registration as a Provisional Psychologist with the Psychologist Board of Australia (PBA).

To be eligible for full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia you must either undertake two years of supervised practice or an accredited Master course (e.g., IX20 or PY18) which involves two years of course work and supervised practica.

Entry into PY09 and PY20 is competitive and is based on your grade point average in PY45. The GPA requirements for PY09 are more stringent.

Further details of both courses and eligibility criteria are available in Studyfinder. Please note: Students in PY45 intending to apply for PY09 and PY20 are required to take the unit PYB350 Advanced Statistical Analysis as one of their elective options.

I am studying PY45 and my GPA is currently below 5. I am concerned that I will not be eligible for entry to PY09 or PY20. What studies can I undertake to gain entry to either of these courses?

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology, PY08 is designed to meet the needs of graduates from non-Psychology degrees who wish to become registered Psychologists. On completion of this one-year course graduates are eligible for entry to either PY09 or PY20 provided they meet the required GPA entry levels for the courses. Graduates of PY45 who do not meet the GPA cut-offs for PY09 or PY20 may also apply for this course and use it to improve their GPA standing. Some advanced standing from PY45 may be available.Students in PY45 intending to apply for PY09 are required to take the unit PYB350 Advanced Statistical Analysis as one of their elective options.
