QUT Motorsport

Design and build a race car for the annual Formula SAE international competition presented by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

QUT Motorsport is managed like a professional racing team with elements of sponsorship development, business management and performance optimisation.

Benefits

  • Industry contacts. Site visit industry sponsor companies, and showcase the team to potential stakeholders at events like the Gold Coast 600.
  • Get hands-on. Practical experience like nothing else you will find at Uni. Work in a dedicated Motorsport workshop, get involved in project meetings, study group sessions and mentoring with senior members.
  • An extensive social calendar. QUT Motorsport co-hosts a go-carting competition with the Mechanical Engineering Student Society (MESS), and holds a range of other social, fundraising and networking gigs throughout the year.
  • Resume booster. This extracurricular activity looks great on a resume. Teamsters have been offered jobs with industry sponsors, and within the motorsport industry itself. QUT Motorsport graduate Jared Cox now works with a V8 Supercar Team.

The Competition

Formed in USA, the Formula SAE competition is for student members to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formula-style racing cars. The restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited to challenge student knowledge, creativity, and imagination. Cars are built with team effort over one year and are taken to a host institution for judging and comparison with other competitors.

The Team

QUT Motorsport comprises about 50 male and female students from mechanical and electrical engineering, journalism, creative industries, industrial design, business, marketing and management courses. Some team members are studying for double degrees in engineering and business.

Various components of the car are designed or manufactured as final year projects. The rear end and the aerodynamic body work of the 2010 car were both final year theses by engineering students.

Many teamsters graduate into mechanical engineering jobs in mining, consulting and project management.
